How does an apple laptop acquire internet access?
I have an apple laptop and am wondering how I can get onto the internet with it. I have cable internet for my computer but how does the laptop pick up the signal? Would it need a wireless router or does it not need it? would any wireless router work for an apple or is there something special for the apples laptops?

either get a wireless router or just plug it directly into the modem via Ethernet.

Which laptop? Does it already have an Airport card? What version of the OS? You can't be sure any of our suggestions will work until you consider these two questions. If this laptop is compatible with Apple's Airport card or Airport Extreme card but doesn't have one, you need to buy one and install it. How to connect varies with OS 9 and OS X so look it up on Apple.com If not an Airport compatible laptop, you can forget about wireless and buy an ethernet router. Connect the laptop, and any other computers, to the router. The router connects to the cable modem. If your service is by PPPoE, you will need to configure the router for that and configure all computers to connect via DHCP. If your service connects via DHCP, no changes are needed for the router out-of-box and configure all computers to connect via DHCP. Same for a wireless router. All newer Apple computers are configured for DHCP via ethernet as a default. Typically, you must unplug the power cord from the cable modem for 30-40 seconds to get it to forget the hardware address of the computer it has been used with. After repower, wait 30-40 seconds and then open a Web browser on the Apple laptop. For the Windows computer, you're on your own. Any wireless router will work with the Airport card as long as the card is the same protocol as the router or higher. Protocols are 802.11B to 802.11N, going from oldest to newest. With an Apple wireless router, the Airport Setup Assistant will help make the configuration easier.
