Can you use a two button mouse on a modern Apple laptop?
I'm required to get a modern Apple laptop computer for my major in college. I personally am a hardcore gamer, and I play World of Warcraft frequently as well. I have always used PCs, I've never even touched an Apple computer until now, and fate has decided to destroy my HP Windows Laptop within the last week, so now I'm REALLY looking forward to getting my new Apple laptop. I'm just wondering now if Apple has seen the light, and is able to support a two buttoned mouse to sate my gaming addiction. Thank you.

Apple supports two button mice. If you need to the you can install windows xp or vista or 7 on the apple laptop using bootcamp and run windows with no issues.

yes, get a USB 2 button with scroll wheel, it will work just like on windows

Apple has always supported two button mice, it's just that their own mice were single button up until the Mighty Mouse, which was four button (though it only had 2 physical buttons, it could sense the location of the pressure) and the Magic Mouse has a multi-touch shell which means lots of gestures and the same buttons as before (sans the fourth button). You'll probably want a gaming mouse, which will work no problem as long as you can get the proper drivers, which usually either come with the mouse or can be found on the company's website

If a store is an authorized Apple retailer, there's no real advantage of going to an Apple store.

I would suggest not buying an Apple computer, you over pay for something that does nothing better then a windows or Linux machine can do for half the price.

If you don't get it from the apple store and get it from any other shop, As long as it's new you get the same warranty. If it breaks and it's still in warrranty you can just take it to the apple store and they will fix it for free. Make sure you make a genius bar resevation first though on the apple.com website.

Of course ! I bought my laptop there. It was awesome ! They helped you chose the right software and even told you what laptop would be better for what your using it for! can you get wireless internet on an apple laptop with just AirPort?
I want to get an apple laptop (the clamshell kind) and I need to know if it is possible to not pay for wireless internet and have AirPort installed into the laptop. My home computer has a cable connection and I want to know what I have to do to access the internet wirelessly from my room. Does airport provide the whole wireless internet or do I really have to pay?

no you do not have to pay. my mom got an apple laptop and she only has airport connected to the computer. it works fine so ask the apple store to just give you airport.

I bought an apple laptop but the owner forgot to remove the password and i cant get a hold of him. So whenever i open it, it asks me for a user password. Is there any way to remove it or change it or something?

usually with most pc's (not sure about laptops) if you open it up and remove the battery (not the big battery, the one that keeps the time its small like a watch battery, it may be called cmos battery) for 3 minutes then it also removes the password. worth a shot.

If you got the original System Reinstall CD with the computer or if you can borrow the CD from someone else that has the same computer, you can use Disk Utility to erase and reinstall the system. You would lose any programs that were installed separately such as MS Office.

really the software is the only difference. i would suggest the apple computer instead of a windows based computer they are much more easier to use.

The major difference is the operating system. Apples run on osx leopard which is a nice stable os and pcs if your buying new will run on vista. Another difference is design, apples are very nice, have smooth lines and look good. Pcs are cheaper, have more parts readily available for them and there are a ton to choose from. Hope this helps

Apple's OS is more hands off. While you can get into the guts if you really want, its designed so that you don't have to. The applications Apple makes work under similar ways. Its all about ease of use and simplicity. A lot of Windows users hate this fact and thus lash out at the use of Apple products. Its not better or worse, its personal taste, I don't know why people have so much trouble coming to terms with that. Apple is not good for gaming though. Most PC games are designed for Windows and OSX versions are not often developed (not enough people to sell to). You can install Windows on a Mac now though if that's an issue. For music, Internet, reports/essays though the Mac is just fine for you in university. In those regards it can do anything a Windows machine can. Again we're not talking better or worse, I'm just saying a Mac can do what you need it to. But if you haven't been an Apple person before, do realize, you would have to learn a new operating system. Its not a tough one to learn, but none the less you have to decide whether or not that's something you would be interested in doing. Also, you need to consider the support available to you at school for a Mac. Is there on-site Mac service centers, are their people around who are well versed in Macs, or do you have friends/family who are Mac users? Computers, Macs and Windows, have problems. So if you're super hands on you can go any route. But if you usually need some help with computer problems, you should consider what kind of support network you have around you. Finally, you should talk to someone at the school (counsellor or someone who knows curriculum, like a department secretary maybe), about the possibility of being expected to install software at home. If so, you need to make sure that there is a Mac version of it, or you need to be ready to install Windows on your Mac then (if you were not planning on doing so before). Most important of all though, is whether or not you'll be comfortable with the Mac. Not just willing to learn a new OS, but also comfortable with that OS. You shouldn't pay the money for a Mac only to find that you just aren't a fan of the way the OS works. So definitely find a Mac store where you can test drive one for at least 30 mins or so. Try to think of some stuff to actually get to test out on the Mac, not just click a few things and then think "oh its great, I'll buy it." The opinions of Internet users have to be taken with a grain of salt. This is YOUR computer, you need to know whether or not YOU are comfortable with it. Who cares if Internet users like it or hate it, what do you think?

really the software is the only difference. i would suggest the apple computer instead of a windows based computer they are much more easier to use.

The major difference is the operating system. Apples run on osx leopard which is a nice stable os and pcs if your buying new will run on vista. Another difference is design, apples are very nice, have smooth lines and look good. Pcs are cheaper, have more parts readily available for them and there are a ton to choose from. Hope this helps

Apple's OS is more hands off. While you can get into the guts if you really want, its designed so that you don't have to. The applications Apple makes work under similar ways. Its all about ease of use and simplicity. A lot of Windows users hate this fact and thus lash out at the use of Apple products. Its not better or worse, its personal taste, I don't know why people have so much trouble coming to terms with that. Apple is not good for gaming though. Most PC games are designed for Windows and OSX versions are not often developed (not enough people to sell to). You can install Windows on a Mac now though if that's an issue. For music, Internet, reports/essays though the Mac is just fine for you in university. In those regards it can do anything a Windows machine can. Again we're not talking better or worse, I'm just saying a Mac can do what you need it to. But if you haven't been an Apple person before, do realize, you would have to learn a new operating system. Its not a tough one to learn, but none the less you have to decide whether or not that's something you would be interested in doing. Also, you need to consider the support available to you at school for a Mac. Is there on-site Mac service centers, are their people around who are well versed in Macs, or do you have friends/family who are Mac users? Computers, Macs and Windows, have problems. So if you're super hands on you can go any route. But if you usually need some help with computer problems, you should consider what kind of support network you have around you. Finally, you should talk to someone at the school (counsellor or someone who knows curriculum, like a department secretary maybe), about the possibility of being expected to install software at home. If so, you need to make sure that there is a Mac version of it, or you need to be ready to install Windows on your Mac then (if you were not planning on doing so before). Most important of all though, is whether or not you'll be comfortable with the Mac. Not just willing to learn a new OS, but also comfortable with that OS. You shouldn't pay the money for a Mac only to find that you just aren't a fan of the way the OS works. So definitely find a Mac store where you can test drive one for at least 30 mins or so. Try to think of some stuff to actually get to test out on the Mac, not just click a few things and then think "oh its great, I'll buy it." The opinions of Internet users have to be taken with a grain of salt. This is YOUR computer, you need to know whether or not YOU are comfortable with it. Who cares if Internet users like it or hate it, what do you think?

ok, click on the little apple in the top left corner by FILE, go down to system preferences. at the bottom of the window, click ACCOUNTS. choose your account, and in the window with your account info there's a button that says CHANGE PASSWORD. hope it helps:)

I use a 15" MacBook PRO since (for me) it is the best balance of screen size, weight and power. The smaller screen sizes are OK too as long as you stick with the MacBook PROs. The MacBooks and Airs have much slower processors. The 17's are quite big and less portable. OK if they are in 'desktop' mode most of the time. If you decide to go with a PC, look at ASUS first. They are the second best in reliability after Apple - from the last PC World reliability survey. http://www.pcworld.com/article/211402/reliability_and_service_laptops.html

What is better for college use, the apple laptop or the dell?
My dad thinks I only want an Apple laptop because of the fact its an "Apple" laptop. He claims that you can find a dell laptop for a fraction of the cost and still get the same product. I think otherwise. I am looking for points to defend my case as to why an apple would be a better computer as opposed to a dell for 4 years in college. Thanks in advance! I can't give you points to defend your case, sorry. Never had a problem with a Dell laptop. Instead of complaining about the type of laptop, just be glad to be getting a laptop from my parents, they could tell you to go buy it yourself. That's what I would do if my son complained about something like that!

this all depends on what you will be doing at college. if you are looking for good graphic interface and aesthetics, go for apple if your willing to spend the extra 500-1000. if you want something that will work just as good as a mac at student projects (ex. writing papers, powerpoint presentations, excel spreadsheets, etc.) and want it for a cheaper price, definitely go dell.

Dell have had issues with their batteries. But Toshiba is no different but I love Toshiba. But in the end ALL LAPTOPS ARE THE SAME just different programs. In the end it determine on how well you keep it up. If you do that it doesn't matter what brand you get.

Personally, I wouldn't advise you to get either brand. I have an HP and love it. It's so up to date, and comes with so much. Mine has a webcam and a built in CD burner with LightScribe, which allows you to burn pictures onto the front of CD's. And when you go to one, if you choose the HP, ask about personalizing it, that's what i did. I've been told by some other people that the Dell isn't nearly as nice as some say. And just because it the Apple brand, doesn't make it the greatest thing ever. But, since you know what you're going to need it for, go to each website and compare the two, see which one has more of what you need. Good luck.

Well, honestly your dad is right...at least for right now. I have an Apple and you have to buy software and install it on your computer in order to be able to use Windows applications (it's called Fusion). You don't have to do that with a Dell. Other than that, macs are awesome! Easy to transition between windows, everything's right there visible for you to see in a toolbar on your desktop. Lightweight and stylish.

at my university, some departments use macs, others used PC's. find out what your university uses in that department. hopefully in your case, it uses apple.

I can't give you points to defend your case, sorry. Never had a problem with a Dell laptop. Instead of complaining about the type of laptop, just be glad to be getting a laptop from my parents, they could tell you to go buy it yourself. That's what I would do if my son complained about something like that!

this all depends on what you will be doing at college. if you are looking for good graphic interface and aesthetics, go for apple if your willing to spend the extra 500-1000. if you want something that will work just as good as a mac at student projects (ex. writing papers, powerpoint presentations, excel spreadsheets, etc.) and want it for a cheaper price, definitely go dell.

the apple laptop of course, it may be more expensive, but it has a lot more features and the features it has on it are a lot better also when you get a mac, you have plug and play which means that if you get like a new mouse or webcam or any external devise, you dont need all the software for it. it also last longer and you cant get viruses on macs

I'm about to transfer to a college in Northern California and before I transfer I want to get a laptop. I am majoring in digital media arts and I heard that apple is still the better brand for the arts. I received a California Governor's scholarship for a significant amount and would like to apply it towards a laptop. The scholarship's website say that it does allow one to buy equipment, like computers. The main issue is that I live in Southern California and am unsure how to purchase. The bookstore website links to the apple educational store. Who do I make it out to? Should I try a local CSU and see if I can buy it there?

Although you can usually use financial aid to cover the cost of a computer, you can't take the money and walk into the Apple store and sign over the loan/scholarship check to them... See, in most cases, scholarships, loans, and grants funds are sent straight from the donor/lender to the school. The school will then take the money and first apply it to your "billable charges" like tuition, fees, and the dorm. If there is money left over (and it sounds like there will be), they will give that money back to you in the form of a refund (usually a check made out to you). Once you have this check, you can use it for anything you want, including a computer. Yes, the money is meant for "educational expenses" but you can see how it could be used for, say, a large party. I don't advise this. :-) On another note: Macs are excellent computers for "creative" people. They're typically more expensive than PCs but, in my opinion, they'll last a lot longer and always look cutting-edge. To buy an apple computer using your educational discount, just walk into the Apple store, go to the register, and when you are checking out, have your Student ID ready and remind them that you get an educational discount. They do it *all* the time. It'll usually save you about $200 on a computer and a little bit on software, ipods, etc. (To buy online, go to http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/routingpage.html and pick your school when they ask you to.)

i am a high school student on our yearbook staff and i am looking to purchase a apple laptop, and then install adobe indesign and photoshop. i am confused and frustrated because i do not know which one i would like to use. Also at this point the price is not a large problem for me.

If price is not a large problem for you, then the best one to get is probably the most expensive one there is! Pretty much if you go to apple.com and order your laptop from there, you will a great computer that can easily run indesign and photoshop. I think they also have great student discounts on there (I know at least they do for ordering iPods, so maybe it is the same with a laptop). I think Apple.com only sells the newest laptops they have (and these are not so customizable as like Dell) so they are already put together for maximum performance. It is mostly a question of size. And they all have their benefits, smaller are easier to carry and lightweight, but larger ones have larger screens and bigger resolutions. So, that's all a matter of taste! Hope this helps!

Macbook is designed specially targetting school children who use it for their day-to-day activity. Also If you happen to work on high memory intensive applications which you may use for video & Sound editing and morphing then I would suggest you to Use Macbook Pro which is basically built for professional users Cost wise Macbook is cheaper than Macbook Pro. However considering that you are going to use it for your school I would say Macbook would be more appropriate. Choose the iPod tab and check "update manually" Now do one of these two steps to view hidden files: 1. Go to Finder and search for “com.apple.finder.plist†Click on the file and search for the line, AppleShowAllFiles FALSE. Change FALSE to TRUE 2. Open the terminal and type “defaults write com.apple.finder. AppleShowAllFiles TRUE†and hit return. To refresh Finder, type “killall Finder†and hit return. If you want to hide them type “defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE†and press return. To refresh Finder, type “killall Finder†and press return. After you're able to see your hidden files, navigate to your iPod drive and copy the files to your hard drive. The song names will appear as 4 letters in your iPod folder. ex: ALBG, ALCW.

iBooks have been discontinued for years. The max RAM depends on which model -- iBook G3s mostly had 640 MB max, iBook G4s 1.25 GB A good place to look for reliable discounts on MacBooks is the Apple Store refurbished section - they have the same warranty as new. You're not going to find discounts on new Apple computers because Apple charges their dealers within 3% - 5% of the retail price, so there is not much room for discounting. If you see a new Apple machine for 20% off, then it is either not new, or stolen, or a fraud.

How can you make an Apple laptop get out of sleep mode.?
I have an Apple laptop that is an iBook and is (I think) a 2001 or so. It went into sleep mode and I can't get it out. I've tried pressing all the buttons and even holding the on/off button to restart it, but all I get is a blinking light (that I'm assuming shows that the laptop is sleeping) and a black screen. Thanks!

How much would it cost to get my apple laptop to be repaired?
i have an apple ibook G3, it runs mac os x 10.4.11. when i get on my laptop it doesnt work correctly and i hear tapping and grinding noises wich means its a phisical problem with my laptop. could somebody tell me what the lowest cost i could pay to get it repaired. if not could somebody tell me of any free way to fix it myself without having to buy anything new? , Thanks

The noise is not caused by software. You need a new HDD ("hard disk drive"). See the links below for an example price for the part, and a how-to guide (need to click on your type of iBook G3). If the processor speed is 700 MHz or less, don't waste extra money for any HDD larger than 128 GB, because all Apple computers built before June 2002 lack 48-bit addressing, which means they cannot recognize more than 128 GB of any HDD (no matter how or if it is partitioned). NOTE TO ALL: The main identifier for all Apple computers is processor type (G3, Core Duo, etc.) and processor speed (800 MHz, 2.4 GHz, etc.). Occasionally build date must be considered when ROM changed for the same processor speed, but that is rarely important. For systems that do not start up, serial number can be translated into all the important data from any of a half dozen websites.

I just got a Apple laptop for Christmas. I have an Sony video camera that is about 2/3 years old that records on mini dvd. I would like to convert my mini dvd onto the Apple so i can edit on imovies.I bought a firewire cable but it does not fit into my video camera and I'm so upset. Main reason I got the Apple so I can convert it. Please help.

Make sure you are looking at the firewire port on your camera (there may also be a USB port - this only works for still pictures) Firewire is also referred to as "IEEE1394" and "iLink". Look at the link below for images of Firewire connectors. You will need one of the first two on the page. You might have bought the wrong type of Firewire cable... Your camcorder has a small Firewire connection (4-pin) and your computer probably has a large (6-pin) connection -in this case you will need a 4-pin to 6-pin cable. However, if you are using a laptop, it MAY have the small connection as well - then you need a 4-pin to 4-pin cable. (even though the site below is called USB Cables, the pictures on this page are actually Firewire Cables - USB cables is the name of the company - I chose this site because it has very good pictures of the cable connectors)

Make sure you have a 6pin to 4pin cable and look for the "iLink" (Sony's name for firewire) port on the camcorder. However, miniDVD camcorders generally do not have firewire ports. Unfortunately, Apple laptops, due to the slot-loading optical drive, cannot directly read miniDVD discs either. You will permanently damage your laptop if you try to insert one. You can buy an external DVD reader/burner though. Then, you have to convert the DVD format video into quicktime or something else that can be edited. miniDVD camcorders are not meant for people who want to edit their video, they are made for the convenience of popping the disc into your DVD player and never messing with it. It isn't impossible to edit, but it requires extra software and a lot of fooling around, and the resulting quality isn't great.

You should look up things like Hackintosh, osX86, iAtkos, and the hack of the Dell Mini 9 into OS X. Research all of those things first and foremost. That will get you an idea of the hardware and the like that you need. Basically if you get something based on a Core 2 Duo, then all the major bits and pieces ought to work out well. I think most mainboards, RAM, and GPUs will fall into place. Again, hit up the Wiki page on osX86 though as I think one of the sub-pages has a good hardware list for you to check out.

You cannot buy Apple parts unless you are an Apple authorized repair center. The cheapest way to do it would be to buy a used one, take it apart, and put it back together. If that's not going to do it for you, you'll have to eBay all the parts from other used machines that people have parted out for a profit. Basically you'll be giving them their profit simply because they've already taken it apart for you. Seriously. Where do you think you can buy a MacBook Pro case? A MacBook Pro motherboard? A MacBook Pro trackpad assembly?

You're shoveling poop against the tide and pissing up a rope. It will get you nowhere. The cheapest way is to buy a MacBook, either new or refurbished. If you just want to build computers, then build a WinBloze and then sell it for cost. That will give the experience building them and may ever get you into a business.

The only thing thats close to a Mac is a Hackintosh, which are illegal. They are basically any PC's running Mac OS X. However, it infringes upon the Mac OS X license to do so. No PC is close to a Mac because they all run Windows. If you don't know the difference between Windows and Mac OS X then you probably shouldn't be worried about getting a Mac computer (you probably just want it because it looks nice). If you want a good PC in terms of build quality, good customer service, and good bang for the buck try Lenovo's they are good solid PC's. They are VERY plain looking compared to Mac's BUT they are good affordable, reliable computers. If your dead set on owning a Mac, I suggest you do some research on them and see if they really are for you. If so, then try Craigslist to find a cheaper one than at the store. OR buy a refurbished Mac from Apple (they are used, but they are cleaned up and inspected and are as good as new for a fraction of the price). I hope this helps.

Try to find an older version of an apple computer. I just bought my first macbook pro and I was in the same boat as you are about 3 months ago. I didn't know what to expect because I was a pc user all my life but they are expensive and worth it. Sooo much faster, no problems with viruses, and it runs the say way all the time no slowing down after you load apps on it. Make the investment.Try to price match Amazon is good also jandr.com..

Apple ran out of steam with there own chip designs June 6, 2005 The confusion amongst fans is related to the software called your operating system. x86 runs Mac OSX/Windows/Linux/Unix/Beos all of these just fine Look in the $400 to $500 dollar range Duel Core 4GB ram/320 or 500GB HD/HDMI out/ On board Radeon or similar.

If you're getting a PC, there are 3 laptops I think are comparable to the 15' MacBook pro, and much cheaper. The first is the ASUS G51JX-A1 for $1441. i7 processor, 6GB, 500 GB, all more than the MacBook pro. The second is the Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV8 for $1499. It has the i7 too, with 6GB RAM, and 640 storage. It even has Blu-ray R/W. It's a beast of a machine. Lastly, there is Lenovo Y560d for $1349. Same deal, i7, 6GB, 500GB. So on the apple site it says to connect your apple laptop to a wireless connection you need the airport base station and connect that to your dsl modem to make wi-fi. but if you already have wireless internet in your house, can you just get it through that, without buying the airport base?

How do you restore a Apple Laptop computer?
I want to restore my apple computer back to the factory default. It has been freezing up and not working properly. I'm wondering do I need a disk to restore my apple laptop or can I do it from the computer itself?

download flip4mac at flip4mac.com (or just google it) and you will be able to view .wmv format on your mac while using quicktime. Also forgot to mention to rip DVD's search for a program called mac the ripper. It's very easy to use

Well you cant put Windows Media Player, Windows version in your Mac. But yes there are workarounds. Simply visit the Microsoft website and download Windows Media Player for Mac and you will get it. You just need to search it there. So the WMP for Mac will definately work on your Mac system. I have 10 photos I'd like to create into a fast little video. Like photo by photo goes by like its a video. How do I do that on an apple laptop?

Search in your applications folder on your hard drive for a program called iMovie. Open the program and drag you pictures onto the window. The program will automatically import the pictures. You can arrange them anyway you want, add a transition in between each picture, and even add captions or titles to them. Hope this is what you're looking for. Good luck. :)

You can do it right from within iPhoto! Simply create a new Slideshow and once you like it, you can export it as a .mov Easy as that!

What is a good laptop with a built in camera thats not apple and under $1000?
I love how the apple laptops have a built in camera but they are way too expensive for me(being that im 16 and paying for it myself). Are there any other great laptops that also have a built in camera? I don't have any experience with laptops being that I'm looking into buying my first. What laptop(s) would you recommend?

I have and use Toshiba Satellite lap tops, second choice would be a Dell. Look at: http://www.toshiba.com or http://www.dell.com they have model with web cams as well as most other makers. I would also wait tell Microsoft comes out with Windows & operating system before buying. Hope this helps

so your looking for a good laptop with a webcam well you wont the acer 5920 laptop i have just had that laptop i got it last wednesday it great for gameing surfing the internet and much more it evan has a glossy screen the webcam is a crystel eye webcam so the images and that are great it evan has dolby home theater i got mine from dabs.com i payed £350 band new it on vista home premineium and meny more great specs. thanks i hope i helped you out

Acer Travelmate or HP laptops are less than $1000 and most have camera. Acer Aspire One is $399 and it is Windows XP with a camera, however it's about 8.9 inch screen size and 8GB of space. But you can buy a 500Gb external drive for like $50.

I saw at blockbuster that they had a apple laptop screen on tv and you could see it on there and stuff. What kind of stuff do i need to do that. All i saw was the tv, laptop, and apple tv. I have all that but im not sure if its right things. Please any help

You can get a DVI and DVI audio cable that transmits sound and audio from your laptop to your TV, Thats providing your TV has a DVI slot for video and audio. Almost any laptop can be hooked up to most TV's

Actually Apple store sells this cable and I bet it is a Belkin made. Once connections are done, just share your display on Mac and you can see it on TV. I watch ton of sports which are streamed on Internet - hooking this way I get to watch it on large TV.
