Apple comes with its own operating system called Mac OS 10. It is a lot better and easy to use than Windows. But if you like you can install Windows on a Macbook via Bootcamp. Bootcamp is a program that comes with all Macs with OS X 10.5 or OS X 10.6. Bootcamp will allow you to run Windows on an Apple, you can even run Windows and OS 10 side by side with a third party application called Parallel. To install Windows on a Mac you first have to open Finder>System>Utilities>Bootcamp Assistance. A new window will pop up and you will go through a quick setup of partitions and other stuff. Please note that Bootcamp will only take Windows XP, Vista, and 7 in 32 bit. Put the installation disc in and the Windows operating system will install. Once the installation is done you are going to have to install the drivers for your Macbook. Have Windows running and put the OS X installation disc into the DVD ROM. All the drivers will install automatically. Log off of Windows to return to OS X, then boot into Windows again and Windows will be fully functioning like on a normal PC.

I'm a little confused. Are you saying you want an Apple (Mac) computer, but you want Windows to be the operating system on it? And if so....why? Windows & Mac are 2 totally different things/operating systems. I've heard there's a way (software) to install a Windows OS on a Mac, and I assume that means you'd have 2 operating systems on 1 computer. Not exactly sure why anyone would want/need that, but I guess there's a reason. Also, be aware....if you get a Mac laptop that's either version 10.4 or 10.5, they don't support internet explorer AT ALL. You'd have to use Safari or Mozilla Firefox as your browser.

Hardware stuff? Almost all things will work on a Mac. No sweat. (SD cards? You may need an adapter to let you read the SD card in a USB slot. We do. Still, no sweat.) Software? You'll find stuff for every function you want, ready to run on a Mac. However, if you TRULY INSIST on running Windows, you can run a copy of Windows on a Mac in a couple ways, or you can buy a copy of CrossOverMac and run many pieces of Windows software there. No pain.

I know there are many different and new apple laptops that are trusted and very pricy. My wish is to get one that is efficient, has lots of memory, is good for schoolwork as well as personal stuff (gaming). Please help me figure out which i should get?

Your choice is between 3 MacBook Air is very light, yet it requires an external cd/dvd reader/burner. This gives you a chance to purchase what ever kind and with all the bells and whistles out there. I have one of those and I team it with Toast and you can do so much with the pair. MacBook it is white, heavier than the Air but not as heavy as the Pro. Does not have a firewire port, which you probably don't care. I do as I have external stuff up the wazoo and most of it is firewire. It is intel, fast but not as fast as the Pro. Does not allow as much ram as the Pro. MacBookPro bigger, faster, has firewire, sd slot. It is also heavier. For university I would do the Air, but I was mostly into anthropology. You might be in an area that needs speed and storage and the ability to run windows to play one or more of their programs. and you might need the ability to on the fly burn a cd or dvd of stuff. For that the Air would be no help, no cd/dvd burner internal. It is so personal that I would no more tell you which one to use, buy, or what ever. You really need to write down what you will be doing, could you get by with the Air, nice and light, and hold some stuff until you get back to the room. Or do you want something more robust. Go to the Apple store in your area if there is one. Go to the apple store on line. See what is available. I love my MacBook, just gave away my Pro as it is too heavy for me anymore. Sorry that I didn't give the Air a try as I live between two apple stores. I probably would have purchased an Air.

you don't by a lnux os.. it's free and it can go on just about any pc,laptop,netbook,Ipod, toaster....just kidding lol. but if you have a laptop just download an iso of a linux os and you can ...burn it to a disc/dvd ,install it to a flash drive,install it to a windows os like a program. run the cd as a live cd there are many choses to use it. i use this one http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ but a remake of it is the version i have now called Super OS http://hacktolive.org/os . if you need to make a disc to run the live cd use this to burn it http://www.imgburn.com/ then just boot the pc with it and just chose the "live" option. for a flash drive i use this http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ . just make sure you have an empty drive with enough space to put the os onto it and plugged in b4 you start Unetbootin . if you need more help just e-mail me

Hi friends, I am supposed to buy a Apple laptop. As i know that some software are not compatible and i don't want to install any third party software in my Apple laptop, i am thinking about buying an external HDD and install XP in it. is it possible to do like this???

You won't be able to do that. Essentially XP won't run on a Mac as the primary boot operating system. An excellent way around your problem is to use a Virtual PC. This is software than emulates a PC and can be run on a Mac. It creates it's own virtual hard disk which is isolated from your Mac system. Sun and others make this software free for the Mac. This way you can have XP running in Window with all your other Mac stuff running too.

I'm not sure but I believe you will have to create a windows partition on your main system drive in order to have teh dual boot feature. But I could be wrong. Most macs will boot even without a system drive at all and only an external drive.

You can dual-boot, however, and there are tons of software options and online training videos online on how to do this. Bootcamp is a popular dual-boot tool, for example. I dropped my apple laptop on the floor and it wont switch off?
I dropped my apple laptop on the floor and it wont switch off?
i dropped my apple laptop , it slid off of a 2 foot high foot stall and landed half on the floor and half on a rug - which was lucky!! - it seems to be ok but the only thing is that it is taking longer to load up when i switch it on and it wont turn off unless i hold the power button down. anyone got any thoughts on what this could be?? or anything i could do that might help?? cheers daisy

am not sure of this answer but try it.. i experienced it already, 1. if you are familiar of dismantling laptops, try to disconnect all the parts such as battery hard drive optica drive memory processor din try to short or reset cmos battery of your laptop and put siicon grease to your heatsink just try it.. after an hour try to connect all the parts you had disconnected din try to hold on the power button of your laptop awhile.. just try it

am not sure of this answer but try it.. i experienced it already, 1. if you are familiar of dismantling laptops, try to disconnect all the parts such as battery hard drive optica drive memory processor din try to short or reset cmos battery of your laptop and put siicon grease to your heatsink just try it.. after an hour try to connect all the parts you had disconnected din try to hold on the power button of your laptop awhile.. just try it

Yes, but if you use Mac OSX you'll get used to it and you'll never look back to Windows. If you could get OSX on any computer, not just Macs, nobody would ever have used Windows.

5 years for any laptop is generally pretty good, if not average life expectancy. I see people trying to nurse laptops along for 7+ years and it's just wrong... To a certain extent, it depends on what you do with it (photo editing vs. word editing, surfing vs. rendering, etc.) But personally I wouldn't pay to repair your iBook/Powerbook. It'll be at least $200-300 at a very minimum, unless you can do it yourself (I wouldn't). I usually peg a laptop for having about 3-4 years of good use, after that, it's usually a backup computer.

Everytime i turn on my apple laptop it wont go to the login.....The screen is white with the apple symbol and the loading circle under it, but it wont do anything else. It just stays stuck at that...What do i do?? :(

Insert your Mac OSX install disk and restart. Hold down the "c" key while it's restarting to start up from that disk. Open the disk utility from the file menu and choose the Macintosh HD and verify and/or repair disk. Hopefully that fixes it. If not then you have a bad drive. If you remove the drive you may be able to recover files to another Mac but in either case you may need to replace the drive. Have you been backing up your data?

I have been using Windows computers for so long, I'd like to try an Apple laptop with Mac. I am looking for a laptop possibly with a built in webcam that isn't too expensive, but can easily help me edit videos for Youtube and other online video websites. Thank you

Apple laptop computer to go between it and a PC?
What programs/features would I need to get on a new Apple laptop computer to go between it and a PC?
I'm thinking of getting a new Apple laptop computer sometime in the next few months (because I miss my old apple computer). I have a PC right now and all the computers at work are PCs so I need to be able to transfer info between WORD doc's (for example) and the apple programs...Is this possible? I'm sure there's software out there that can do this but will it be worth the money and easy enough to use? Suggestions??? Thanks.

I'm not positive, but i think you can just get a USB flash drive and most should work on both platforms. This way you can just transfer the files back and forth. If you ask the guy at best buy, he will let you know.

It's true. However, it's also true that an apple isn't compatible with hardly anything. It's much more difficult to find software and printers that work with it. Pretty much everything you buy for it has to be apple.

No its not true that they NEVER have problems relating to virus'. However, you are a lot less likely to get virus' on a mac as macs are less common. It's not that mac's are harder to hack, its because windows computers are so much more common, your average hacker wants to attack as many peoples computers as possible, and since most people have windows he/she makes virus's for windows computers, which don't work on macs. Personally I believe macs (OS X) is a much better system than windows. I have had mine for over 2 years and never had a virus, its ever crashed, and it has never slowed down, despite consant use, an almost full hard drive, and hundreds of programs for it. Windows computers are more compatable with programs. However, as macs are becoming more popular, almost every mainstream program now has a mac equivilant, so you really don't need to worry about compatability. The only case which this is a worry is if you work at an office with its own sofwtware, this may not work on a mac, so its best to check out with the tech guys before buying it, if you're going to be using it for work. Problem is, as macs become more and more popular, which is what is happening (as they are so great!) then people are more and more tempted to create virus' for macs. Therefore anti virus sofware and firewalls are more and more important for macs. However, personally i just use my router firewall and nothing on my mac and I've never had a problem (I know people will complain at me for this, but in the end everythings backed up, and my anti virus software isnt slowing down my mac) Anyway good luck and I would recomend you do get a mac, but dont 100% feel that that by doing so, you will be exept from all virus;.

With this goal in mind, Windows has more users that can be affected than Mac users. Therefore, most viruses are written for Windows and not Mac or Linux operating systems. It's true. However, it's also true that an apple isn't compatible with hardly anything. It's much more difficult to find software and printers that work with it. Pretty much everything you buy for it has to be apple.

No its not true that they NEVER have problems relating to virus'. However, you are a lot less likely to get virus' on a mac as macs are less common. It's not that mac's are harder to hack, its because windows computers are so much more common, your average hacker wants to attack as many peoples computers as possible, and since most people have windows he/she makes virus's for windows computers, which don't work on macs. Personally I believe macs (OS X) is a much better system than windows. I have had mine for over 2 years and never had a virus, its ever crashed, and it has never slowed down, despite consant use, an almost full hard drive, and hundreds of programs for it. Windows computers are more compatable with programs. However, as macs are becoming more popular, almost every mainstream program now has a mac equivilant, so you really don't need to worry about compatability. The only case which this is a worry is if you work at an office with its own sofwtware, this may not work on a mac, so its best to check out with the tech guys before buying it, if you're going to be using it for work. Problem is, as macs become more and more popular, which is what is happening (as they are so great!) then people are more and more tempted to create virus' for macs. Therefore anti virus sofware and firewalls are more and more important for macs. However, personally i just use my router firewall and nothing on my mac and I've never had a problem (I know people will complain at me for this, but in the end everythings backed up, and my anti virus software isnt slowing down my mac) Anyway good luck and I would recomend you do get a mac, but dont 100% feel that that by doing so, you will be exept from all virus;.

It is a myth; not true at all. You are less likely to experience a virus, because most "hackers" set out to destroy/attack millions of people at once. With this goal in mind, Windows has more users that can be affected than Mac users. Therefore, most viruses are written for Windows and not Mac or Linux operating systems. This does not mean that you should not get anti-virus protection, because it is not a secret to "hackers" that many Mac users (like your cousin) believe that they are secure from viruses, so Macs are easy computers to constantly monitor without ever being found out. So, make sure you get some anti-virus protection on your Mac. ALL computers need anti-virus protection.

Safari support tabs an probably new windows. Try to open a new tab with Cmd+T and a new Windows with Cmd+N If this doesn't work you always can chose a different browser like Opera or Firefox.

Do you have to have an Apple Laptop to iChat?
If I got another laptop with a built-in camera, can I somehow download iChat and use that to chat with someone using an iMac or is it strictly Apple Laptops that can use iChat only?

I don't understand why Apple does not release a Windows version of iChat. Windows users can have an account with MobileMe, which iChat is a part of, so what's the deal? Oh well. That's one reason I don't use iChat. I can't use it to chat with my Windows using friends. Instead, I use Skype. It's free and works well on both Windows and Mac - including video chat.

Apple laptops are known for their premium pricing. They are the same all throughout the world and the only way you'd be able to buy a cheaper one is to either buy it used or refurbished. You are not the first to go onto this part of Y!A asking for a cheap Apple. But asking for a cheap Apple is like asking a dealer to sell you a brand new Mercedes Benz for the price of a Honda Civic. It won't happen. But there is a place that i do like where you can buy refurbished macbooks. I'll link you up. This place helped me restore many of my electronics and is pretty cool. i am a teenager, and the macbook air sounded pretty cool, but then discovered it was over priced, and it doesnt have many outlets to connect things, also it does not have a slot for DVDS/CDs? thts like woaa. so i was wondering if the regular macbook is a better laptop for me? i need help finding the right apple laptop for me? thnnxx.

Well, I know Mac's are "cooler" with everyone than PC's, but the fact is PC's offer a lot more bang for the buck. All the macs are high priced, you can get a well equipped Dell for a fraction of the cost of a Mac and then spend the money you save on cool software, CorelDraw for example. I don't know much about macs new stuff, I used to own a G4, I thought it crashed worse than any pc I ever owned.

All of the new MacBooks are great computers. You can accomplish nearly anything that a casual user would need to do with any model of the MacBook (white, 2.0GHz Aluminum, and 2.4 GHz Aluminum). If you're somewhat tight on cash, go with the MacBook White for $999. Otherwise, get an aluminum model. You will get a much sturdier computer with an awesome new trackpad. I personally chose the 2.4 GHz model for its larger hard drive and backlit keyboard. I love my MacBook; it has yet to let me down. The MacBook Air has a great concept behind it, but it is too expensive for loss of computing power that it provides. If you plan on using your computer for things like intense video editing or gaming you should probably get one of the Pro models. Otherwise, get a MacBook. Good Luck!

I have a 12" powerbook G4, I've had it for over 4 years. Is it great yes, still holding up strong. The operating system is incredibly user friendly, and things are pretty easy to configure on it unlike windows, basically most things are plug and play. I'd recommend the macbook pro (the new version of the powerbook) also, but if you're just an average pc user you shouldn't need more then the Macbook. Both my sisters have Macbooks and they're happy with it. Color is a matter of opinion but the black one is their top model cuz it comes with the most stuff and also costs more. Yeah macs are more expensive but they're a lot more practical when it comes to overall usage. For you nay sayers, yes there is a lot more software for pc's and almost everything is based around windows but Mac's are made to be incredibly user friendly. So would I recommend one? Yes. Get one you'll like it i promise ;).

So I was thinking about getting a laptop for highschool. What are some major differences between the Macbook and the Macbook Pro? Also, do they both come with ilife 08 and leopard (in like 2 days)? Is it worth the extra $1000 to get the Pro?

Macbooks are perfect for high school. I continue to use mine throughout college. It's more portable. Obviously if you can afford the MBP though, get it. It's faster, bigger screen, more RAM comes standard, bigger hard drive, better speakers. As for leopard, you would probably have to preorder/select it as a feature when you order the laptop. Hope this helped!

For high school, get the MacBook. Only if you were a senior, and going on to an art college would the MacBook Pro be worth it. The MacBook is fine, it'll come with Leopard and iLife 08. Just add iWorks 08 and you are set. The MacBook Pro is larger, has a better screen, faster processor and metal case.

I have a Apple-Macbook PRO with a 17inch (2nd generation); i recommend spending the extra $100 and upgrade to the higher resolution screen, which is 1920 x 1200 pixels.. and now available in LED; I prefer the anti-glare; not really sure why so many companies make the glossy standard now... at first the glossy seems to be a good choice because it "appears" sharper... but damn, the GLARE is annoying and will glare almost anywhere... the anti-glare provides a much softer tone that is pleasant to look at... and yes better for your eyes as well.. very important both displays are great; i just have a preference for the 17in because although i do travel with it; the extra space comes in handy... and it is a desktop replacement for me.. I'd choose the 17in also because you have the option of upgrading to the higher resolution screen which makes the most of the video card; the only con i can see is that because it is a bigger screen, it will suck a little more battery than the 15.4in, but not much.. i'd only go with the 15.4in if you really think that 17in is too big, width and length-wise... remember they're both only 1inch thick laptops

if you really want to use windows on your laptop, you can always run it via a program called boot camp. it's available on the apple site. basically, if you have it, when you turn on your macbook, you have the option of choosing between apple's OS X and Windows XP/Vista. it might be hard getting used to though, considering that apple keyboards are slightly different from pc keyboards.

Use the help menus whenever possible. You can access the help menus by accessing the app's window and pressing Command (Apple key)+H. If that doesn't help you, use the Apple Support pages or use a reference material. Don't try to do things the Windows way. The Mac is more logical. On a Mac, you go to the little blue apple on the top and drag down to "shut down" to turn the computer off. In Windows you go to "Start", does that make sense? And you won't need anti-virus software, there are no MacOS X viruses.

if you really want to use windows on your laptop, you can always run it via a program called boot camp. it's available on the apple site. basically, if you have it, when you turn on your macbook, you have the option of choosing between apple's OS X and Windows XP/Vista. it might be hard getting used to though, considering that apple keyboards are slightly different from pc keyboards.

Use the help menus whenever possible. You can access the help menus by accessing the app's window and pressing Command (Apple key)+H. If that doesn't help you, use the Apple Support pages or use a reference material. first of all, the first person has no idea what he is talking about. if he had a chance to use and get to know a mac he would never give it up. 60GB should be fine if you dont plan on storing tons of huge files on it. my first laptop had a 75GB hard drive and i didnt come close to using all of it, and i had a ton of music and pics on it. second, look for any signs of the laptop being abused, like droped, and look for scratches. ask him how much ram the laptop has, it should have at least 512 KB. ask how fast the laptop is, or what the processer speed is, normal for a used laptop should be probably about 1 GHZ. als, ask him about bundled software, or what software is included. if he cant answer some of these questions, i would not recommend getting the laptop.

not true. I have had a PC for most of my life. I got a mac laptop not too long ago(I'm typing on it right now) and i have been able to go everywhere. macs are for kids or noobs. Get a pc laptop. Mac users make up only 8% of computer users. Macs have limited software. I dont see how anyone can get a mac unless using for film or something. Waste of $1,500+

NO NO NO NO NO! My brother is an AMAZINGLY TALENTED computer guy and that is NOT the way to go. The only thing apples are good for is journalism and magazine editors. Try HP, Toshiba, and Sony. Best laptop brands. BIG BIG NO TO APPLE! Im doing this for your own good danielle lol.

Apple Laptop?
I wanna buy a laptop. I am going to get the MacBook. 2.4ghz 2 gigs of ram and 160 hd. Anyone have it, how is it. I also am buying the apple remote for it. Any tips on saving for it? I'm 16 btw and am looking for a job.

MacBooks are great. Also, you need to take into consideration what you'll be needing the laptop for. For example, the MacBook isn't a great gaming laptop.

if you get it at the apple store see if you can get a student discount. ask them to see if your school is on the list i saved 100 bucks on mine

Save your money and go for a Laptop with Windows on. They're about half the price (here in England anyway). I bought an Acer 5050, and I've had Mac OSX running on it :). Look into OSX86.

go to craigslist. I'd reccomend the MacBook G4 at the absolute earliest. Your best bet is to buy a used one for $600 and put $150 into it. I bought mine on craigslist, i'm from buffalo so i went to buffalo.craigslist.com, you might need to go to ontario.craigslist.com or wherever you live

1) tell your friends and family that your looking for a job and they could help you 2)sell your old stuff you don't need anymore,books,shoes,ect 3)buy something and sell it for a higher price =)

Well. you made a good pick on which macbook.. stay away from the older macs. i was a mac tech up until the end of last year.. and i know first hand that Lepord will run like total crap on a G4 also like others said macs are not good for gaming.. there are very few games out for MacOS and even then the macbooks wont play most of them.. you'd need the Macbook Pro.. but why pay another grand for it when you only have about 5 games worth choosing from Hope it helps -The UnixGod

If you want to save money you can buy a used one.... apple sells what is called "refurbished" models. They are used laptops that have been through apple quality control again. I have an older model Macbook- White 2 ghz, 1 gig of ram, 80 hd. You don't have to buy a remote.... it comes with the laptop so don't waste your money! I love my macbook, I never have any problems with it.... its only crashed twice and I've had it for a year. Apple constantly comes up with updates for its software and has great support services online and by phone. The laptop is nice and compact, very easy to fit into a small bag- and is very light. I would recommend it.

good luck with that! im an apple user! youre 16? how much do u know about macs? are you into games and stuffs? do u know that 90% of all games and applications are not mac-compatible? but dont fret it comes with a bootcamp assistant which allows you to run windows (you will provide for it) and the remote is free which is worthless in any ways. its also best to upgrade the ram to 4GB and if u have a friend whom works at a school, let him/her buy it... apple will give u a $100 off the price please rate

I currently have a HP desktop and wanted to buy a laptop. I was wondering if changing to an Apple would be a good idea. I need to be able to use Word though, and I am not sure if they are compatable. What are the major differences between Apples and Macs - things I would notice rather than technical specs.

Well basically the shortcuts on a mac are different than a pc, i too made a transition from a hp to a mac and i love it. You can always buy the word program for mac for some extra cash... its really worth im very happy with my decision.

yeah word works fine on macs, there really no big difference. except macs cant use many of the pc softwares, but most big ones are ok for macs like all the adobe, word, programs anyhow i think macs are better b/c they make everything from the hardware to the software to the case itself so i think its better equipped so they all work better and also it looks nicer too :D

get a normal laptop... and have Linux installed on it... Mac's are over rated, over priced, And over all ownership is more expensive you have to buy all the software to run on it and it is not cheap. Most computer manufactures now support Linux... Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, Acer, Toshiba will all run Linux but they don't advertise the fact that they do... cause store get more for promoting and selling Windows Vista.. check out the web links below. and see for yourself click on the you tube link first and watch the video clips and you get a office package that is better than MS office 2007 with all the same features,,,, Open Office 2 which is free check out the web links below
